St. John's, NL - (December 23, 2004)
A milestone in the $15 million construction project of the Delta St. John’s expansion was reached with the topout of the building’s concrete structure.
Since the beginning of construction on May 10, 2004, approximately 80 people were employed, clocking 60,000 person hours to complete the structure. Nora Duke, Vice-President, Hospitality with Fortis Properties indicated that the majority of work completed to date has been undertaken by Newfoundland companies. “While we operate both nationally and internationally, we are very proud of our Newfoundland roots and always place a priority on supporting local business,” said Ms. Duke. “We are very pleased with the progress of this project and look forward to its completion in June 2005.”
“To date approximately $5 million of the project’s budget has been spent,” commented Duke. “With the closing in of the roof and installation of the windows, the next step to follow is the exterior cladding of the building to make it weather tight. Over the winter the electrical, mechanical and interior finishes will be completed.”
The expansion entails the addition of 128 rooms, bringing the hotel’s room count to over 400, and 5,000 square feet of meeting space, making it the largest convention hotel in Atlantic Canada.
