Crown and Moose Pub lauded for being smoke-free establishment By CORY HURLEY Star Staff Writer cornerbrook

Wednesday, June 18, 2003 The Crown and Moose Pub in the Corner Brook Holiday Inn was given an award for being the first voluntary smoke-free liquor establishment Tuesday evening. Yvonne Hynes, food and beverage manager, accepts the award on behalf of the establishment from Tanya Matthews, a member of the Tobacco Free Network and regional health educator for Health and Community Services Western. The Crown and Moose Pub in the Corner Brook Holiday Inn was lauded as the first voluntary smoke-free liquor establishment in the western region at an event held Tuesday evening.

The Tobacco Network, in conjunction with Health and Community Services Western, sanctioned the event to recognize the pub and eatery as well as present them with an award in recognition of this measure.

"We're very proud to be recognized as a smoke-free establishment," Yvonne Hynes, the establishment's food and beverage manager, told The Western Star. "It's good for our staff and their health as well because they're not subjected to second-hand smoke.

"We're very proud to receive that award and to be one of the first pubs to actually get it."

Hynes said the establishment contemplated allowing smoking after 9 p.m. or going smoke-free all the time. They decided to go smoke-free and haven't looked back.

"Legislation is going to purpose that everybody go non-smoking after a while, so we decided to take a proactive approach and do it now," she said. "Most of our comment cards have been very positive. We get more of the non-smokers late at night because of the smoke-free environment. I haven't heard any negative comments from smokers."

Seamus Breen, advocacy officer for the Alliance for the Control of Tobacco (ACT), was guest speaker at the event. He spoke of the importance of tobacco control initiatives and the progress that's been made to date within the province.

Tanya Matthews, a member of the Tobacco Free Network and regional health educator for Health and Community Services Western, also addressed the group on the significance of the Crown and Moose Pub taking the initiative to go smoke-free and the hope that many more establishments will follow.
